BUD THOMPSON
Bud Thompson, of Thompson Valley, Virginia, uses a 100 year old forge and anvil that belonged to his great grandfather, a North Carolina farmer who did his own blacksmithing: shoeing horses, making plow points, axes, picks and such for the farm, as many did in the early 1900’s.
Bud, a ferrier by trade, is a self taught blacksmith who has been shaping metal for over 20 years. He is still fascinated by the way in which a plain piece of metal can be transformed through heat and pressure into a curved, functional, and in some cases, aesthetic object.
Bud enjoys preserving this dying art by regularly demonstrating the craft, as well as teaching the younger generation about this important profession of days gone by through apprenticeship opportunities.
