CASSIE OGLE
Cassie Ogle uses traditional crafting skills to create out-of-the-ordinary yet practical things. Her childhood passion for books and paper laid the ground work for her to become a bookbinder. When she is not making books, she knits, crochets, and spends her time learning other crafts.
Cassie grew up in a home full of books, enjoyed going to the library, and was always excited about the school book fair. The covers, groups of books, the feel of the pages, even the smell is what she was interested in. She simply loved books. Along with the love of books came the love for all things paper–collections of magazines, calendars, stationary, postcards, and photos.
In 2006, Cassie participated in a pilot program at SwVCC through a grant from Handmade In America. Through this program, she learned to make hand-bound books. Since then, she has continued her education through instruction books and online communities.
As a young girl, Cassie's grandmother taught her to crochet. Her grandmother also ran a small shop where she sold her crochet toys. That relationship with her grandmother is one of the reasons she loves to craft - especially toys. She enjoys knitting and crocheting useful things that lean toward the quirky and playful side.
Last year, Cassie picked up a few knitting books from the library and taught herself to knit. In the spring of 2007, she began taking knitting and crocheting classes offered through SwVCC. In the future, she hopes to learn to spin and dye yarn to further personalize her work.
