DON ELMES
Don has always been fascinated by light. As a science major in college, he learned that matter, the stuff we are made of, can be described as “frozen light.” Photography for Don is also a medium of “frozen light,” a means by which the fleeting moments and discoveries that define our lives can be captured and shared. For Don, looking through the lens at the ever-changing painting of light that surrounds us, “entices and beckons me to really see.”

Don became interested in photography after moving with his wife, Ellen, to Bearwallow, just down the road from Peapatch, near the remote mountain community of Jewell Ridge, Virginia. In this rural setting, they experienced more intimately the myriad forms of the natural world around them. With the birth of their son Nicholas, Don took on the role of “house husband” and supporter of Ellen in her artistic career. Eventually this led to managing a gallery and frame shop for several years. Family trips to the western states and National Parks provided Don with expansive life altering experiences and numerous photographic opportunities.

Don has been an Adjunct Faculty instructor at Southwest Virginia Community College for fifteen years and has taught courses in Design and Matting and Picture Framing, as well as photography seminars. Over the years, Don has worked in many capacities in the arts: as a craftsman and woodworker, as an actor and stage technician, as a desktop publisher, and as a photographer. Don has displayed and sold his photographs at several gallery locations.

Most recently, Don has spent many hours with Sarah Romeo photographing and processing photographs for this website.
