JAY HENDERSON
Jay Henderson has known potters all of his life–one of his sisters is a professional potter in North Carolina–but he only began making pottery several years ago. After starting pottery classes at SwVCC, he became interested in making his own glazes. Jay works in mid-range stoneware clay (fired to Orton Cone 5-6; about 2200 degrees F.) and high-range earthenware clay (fired to Orton Cone 3-4; about 2100 degrees F.) and he has developed and compounded unique glazes for both types of clay. His wheel-thrown pieces are based primarily on traditional Southern utilitarian pottery and North Carolina art pottery, emulating forms and methods he has observed being used many years ago by local potters while he spent summers at his grandparents’ farm in Seagrove, North Carolina, a traditional pottery center. Jay also makes some hand-built pieces using primitive (coil-built) techniques.
