JENNIFER SCOTT
“I have always been interested in the arts. At the age of twelve I sold German Scherenschnitte (papercuttings) at various art shows across the country and had several pieces published in the children’s book, “The ABC’s of Tazewell County.” Since that time I have studied and practiced many different art forms such as watercolors, ceramics, and drawing. My specialty for two-dimensional arts is portraiture...sketching and painting very detailed representations of people and animals. Though I love two-dimensional arts, I find that I get a little too detailed and involved with most of my two-dimensional pieces. I have always loved abstract art, but whenever I pick up a pencil or brush I am unable to paint outside of what I can see either in real life or in pictures.
"I am able to be much freer with the three-dimensional arts. It is still important to be a detail-oriented person when working on jewelry because it is necessary for repeating the sometimes very intricate patterns found in handmade jewelry. However, the overall experience for me is much more personally gratifying as I feel that each piece is a completely unique piece of art that I have brought to life rather than just a copy of something that I am viewing.
"I got involved in creating jewelry simply out of need. I had a bridesmaids dress and could find no jewelry anywhere to match the unique color of the dress. I found a hand-blown glass bead at an art store and the rest is history. I ended up with a beautiful necklace for the wedding and have been hooked on jewelry making ever since. I have mentored with an artisan from Tamarack and taken several classes to perfect the various techniques involved in creating jewelry.
"I prefer using natural materials such as gemstones and freshwater pearls in my pieces. I feel that these items are already so beautiful that their beauty speaks for itself. I add small accents with glass, metal or by using a combination of stones and pearls to best display the natural beauty of the materials. Unless creating a custom set of pieces (such as for a wedding party) all of my pieces are one-of-a-kind. I do not buy my materials in bulk to mass-produce the same items over and over. If I have a particular design that is well liked I may create some similar pieces, but I ensure that no two are ever exactly alike. Most of my supplies are bought by the single strand…providing just enough to make a necklace and a set of earrings.
"I hope that those who buy my jewelry, or receive it as a gift, enjoy wearing it as much as I enjoy making it!”
