JUDY LOONEY
I grew up in the hills of southwest Virginia where I watched my father draw his cartoons of family and friends and the everyday life they led. My mother was always working on some type of craft or quilting so I was constantly surrounded by creativity, and I could see the joy other people derived from these special gifts. After finishing high school I received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pikeville College where I majored in English, French and Art. I taught 32 years at Council High School in the Buchanan County public school system. I enjoyed sharing my love of art with my students. My involvement with student leadership and other extra curricular activities kept me so busy I had trouble finding time for my own artwork. I retired from teaching in 2003 and have really enjoyed having time to woodburn and paint again.

My woodburning and painting lets me lose myself in my great loves: animals, nature, gardening and any type of artistic creativity. I love painting a pet, or a favorite flower or scene on a tote bag or canvas to make a unique gift for someone. The wonderful experience of playing with colors always amazes me. I also adore woodburning. I get such a thrill when I see a work which started as a blank piece of wood progress to a finished work of art. The grain of the wood and any irregularities in the piece, such as knots, often determine the subject matter for the work.
