KAREN WARD
“I became interested in pottery while taking my first class at SwVCC under Mr. Doug Branton. In 2002, he handed me my first block of clay. That day, I discovered my passion. My pieces are hand-built using clay slabs. I use different colors of clay that I mix together to create interesting looks. I also use stamps, dried clay, tree bark, leaves, tiny pinecones, twigs, and other items to decorate with. Making pottery is very relaxing and soothing to me. I use it often as a stress reliever and can easily lose all sense of time while creating a piece. My life has been so enriched by understanding the process of what a piece of clay must go through in order to become a finished work of art. Understanding this natural process has also given me great insight into how Jesus, (our Potter) sees us, (His clay). He allows the struggles to fashion and mold each of us into unique and different vessels; every vessel has a place and a purpose. My handmade items are not perfect, and neither am I. I’m so thankful I’m still in the Potter’s hands and He’s still working on me..."as the clay is in the potter’s hands so are ye in mine hand." Jeremiah 18:6
Karen Ward lives in Grundy, Virginia, with her daughter and husband of 28 years.
