KATHY SHEARER
Kathy Shearer grew up in a small apartment in New Jersey, just a few miles from the heart of New York City. Her only relationship to coal was a dim knowledge that the thermostat on the living room wall and the truck that delivered little black rocks to the basement chute were somehow connected. When she married a Virginian and settled down in the far southwest corner of this state, her work for a community action agency sent her into the coalfields and a whole new world. Today she helps people preserve their oral and pictorial histories through her writing and her publishing business, Clinch Mountain Press. She also has published two books by the late Jack Kestner, who for 18 years wrote a very popular newspaper column on life as he saw it from his home high atop Clinch Mountain. View from the Mountain is a collection of several of his readers' favorite columns, and Fire Tower is a suspense novel that is set at the fire tower on Hayters Knob.
