MARY MARTIN
"My passion for art comes from my Appalachian heritage. My ancestors were resourceful and creative, living simple lives, growing or making whatever they needed. When I do basket weaving, I become lost in the moment, and freedom prevails. I feel the love of my heritage, and, most of all, I feel the love of my dad as his spirit guides me. When a basket is finished, there is a sense of self-fulfillment and completeness. I feel that I have preserved a part of my heritage."

Mary comes from an Appalachian heritage instilled with the will to survive, simply and creatively. She lives on a three-acre farm near Bluefield, Virginia, raising Alpacas, gardening and canning, quilting and basket weaving. The simple life is a treasure to her, and she particularly enjoys continuing the Appalachian heritage of basket weaving.
