PEGGY HERBERT
Papercutting is a worldwide ages-old craft, beginning in China in the fourth or fifth century, two centuries after the invention of paper. It is called scherenschnitte (sher-en- shnit- uh) in Germany and Switzerland, wycnanki (vee-chee-non-kee) in Poland, monkiri (mon-kee-ree) in Japan, chien-chih (jian-jeh) in China and knippen (knip-pen) in the Netherlands. Some artists create their own designs, while others pride themselves on copying traditional patterns exactly.
I began cutting in 1997 to pass time while recuperating from foot surgery. Having always loved paper dolls, I found this a sophisticated or ‘grown-up’ version of the art. Continuing patience, practice and perseverance have become my key to this amazing art form.
Peggy was born in Holden, West Virginia, and moved to Russell County, Virginia, in 1958. She now resides in the Belfast Community.
