PERRY JOHNSON
"I paint in a realist manner, going beyond the visual fact to illustrate truths. The point of my focus is where mere information is distilled into a story. I recompile the concrete objects of my environment into a context for the narrative. There is allegory and insinuation. Layered meanings allow connections to be made on many levels. Truth is strange and sometimes our best response is to laugh. I enjoy puns–playing with the relationships between the visual and the verbal.
"I assemble a cast of characters and build the visual set through sketches and composite photographs. The computer allows me to consider possibilities of composition and scale quickly. On the canvas, I remain invested in the conceptual foundations of the painting. The painting is an evolution, not a transcription of the previous groundwork. I work to ensure that the painting is satisfying as an object. The process of painting engages every faculty and satisfies every sense."
