RHONDA WHITED
Rhonda Wolford Whited grew up in Springville, Virginia, a small town in Tazewell County. She’s been drawing and painting since childhood. As a young girl, her mother used to draw paper dolls for her and her sisters. This was an early influence in her interest in the arts.

Most of her young life was devoted to creating representational artwork utilizing pencils, pastels, acrylics, and oils. While attending college at Virginia Intermont, Rhonda was exposed to other art forms and mediums, such as printmaking, sculpture, and theatrical costuming. Ultimately, her artwork of choice became surrealism, which combined her very active imagination with her many years of experience.

“I am fascinated with being able to make a 2-D piece of artwork look 3-D, add in a little impossibility and this is a most wonderful combination…it’s something to be excited about.”

Combining her graphic arts and design skills, her largest work thus far is a 6’x10’ mural commissioned by the Riverview community in Kingsport, Tennessee. She has also produced several illustrations for books and book covers authored by Adda Leah Davis. The broad range of Rhonda’s work includes portrait painting, sculpture, and desktop publishing. She is also a very accomplished calligrapher and seamstress.

Rhonda is currently the Gallery Director for Southwest Virginia Community College and assists with promotion, sales, and exhibitions at the Appalachian Arts Center.
