RICHARD HUDSON
Richard Hudson is a resident of Pounding Mill in Tazewell County, Virginia. His interest in wood working grew from working with a family friend who was a master woodworker and dedicated mentor. Richard pursued this interest as a teenager and took his first woodworking classes in public school.

Over the years, this hobby became an avocation. Many of the natural woods of southwestern Virginia can be found on his sixty acre farm where cherry, walnut, hickory, cedar, sycamore and oaks are harvested, dried, and were first shaped into pre-school toys for his daughters. These simple toys gave way to wooden wagons, trains, and paddle boats, wind up race cars and intricate geometric puzzles, chess and checker boards. As the girls grew, so did Richard’s interest in re-creating traditional Appalachian Folk Toys.

Hudson is an alumnus of West Virginia University and has spent his professional life in higher education currently serving as Professor and Vice President for Finance and Administration for Southwest Virginia Community College. Richard has taken classes at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina and plans to complete additional classes through Arrowmont in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
