RICHARD VOGEL
Richard Vogel was born in the small town of Bad Vilbel, near Frankfurt, Germany. At the age of 18, he moved to the mountains of far Southwest Virginia. It was here that he became interested in the rich craft tradition of the place and began to teach himself about woodworking. During this learning, he began to collect antique hand tools such as froes, spoke shaves, planes, axes, chisels and knife blades–onto which he would sometimes fashion his own found antler handle. To this day, all of his primitive hay rakes, welsh love spoons, walking sticks and dough bowls are made using these older techniques and tools. For twenty years Richard has practiced and refined the art of shaping fallen trees and branches gathered off his land at Tip Top–near Mud Fork Mountain–in Tazewell County, Virginia. Over time Richard has come to understand the wood he finds, allowing it to speak to him about the form it wants to become. Richard believes his practice "cleans the soul."
