SARAH BOWLING
"Time flows continuously and is made up of seasons. This series of watercolor paintings focuses on the seasons of our year represented by food and nature.
"I find great comfort in the simple things of life: good food, good books, good friends and great family. I have adopted the philosophy reflected in the Filoli Estate motto: Festina Lente, or, Make Haste Slowly. I value life and time. I want to experience it fully and treasure the moment, not rush through time. In this series I have focused on the simple beauty of each season that provides us with food for our health and for our soul.
"Traditionally, fall is a time of bounty and surplus. When I think of fall, I think of Thanksgiving–a time of celebration and enjoying the moment of harvest. As a nutritionist and gardener, I view fall as a time of beginnings as well as harvest. The seeds we save in fall will create the plants of the spring and the cycle continues. Fall’s bounty uses images of actual produce from my garden and my friends’ gardens. I had a surplus of eggplant, okra and permelon; Liz and David had pumpkins and sunflowers; Allen had gourds and squash.
"Winter is a time to read, relax in front of the fire and plan the gardens of spring and summer. During this season we usually have a little more time to be at home to make bread, to enjoy the aroma of rising dough and bread baking. I come from a family that enjoys making yeast breads. Winter Anew features this activity, enjoyment of the season and dreams for the spring.
"Spring: The first of the series, the coming of spring features the fresh foods of the season: asparagus, strawberries and eggs combined with the seasonal flowers on a background of spring colors. I started this painting when snow was on the ground and I was dreaming of any sign of spring."
All paintings are on half sheet 140# watercolor paper (22’x15”).
